Welcome to RPS Pharmacy and Pharmacology Reports (RPSPPR). As the inaugural Editor-in-Chief, I am honoured to introduce you to the first new fully open access journal from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), in partnership with Oxford University Press (OUP), two mission-driven, non-profit organisations, with a shared vision to create a truly interdisciplinary forum to share developments into new life-changing medicines.

We are launching RPSPPR to complement Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (JPP), a leading publication disseminating high-quality pharmaceutical research since 1870. While the two journals are similar in scope, RPSPPR will provide an outlet for research that prioritises scientifically sound results over the more novel, innovative results found in JPP. I have served as a JPP editorial board member for 5 years under the editorship of Professor David Jones, and this new journal will reflect the same high editorial standards and author services. I would like to thank David who deserves recognition for his support and invaluable guidance for the launch of RPSPPR and mentorship in my role as Editor.

I’m also grateful for the support of several outstanding and experienced researchers from across the world willing to join the board; they will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the journal. A core aim agreed by the board of RPSPPR is to enable fair and rapid publication through a simple, efficient submission and peer-review process. We have an experienced editorial support team from both OUP and RPS on hand to offer personalised guidance for authors from submission to publication. We also aim to provide timely and unbiased review reports from experienced, independent referees.

Pharmacy and pharmacology continues to grow and nurture innovation. Once emerging technologies now demonstrate great advances, including screening for natural products, organ-on-a-chip systems for clinical pharmacology, gene therapy, cancer vaccines, nanotechnology, additive manufacturing and end-to-end manufacturing processes (e.g. Process Analytical Tools [PAT]).

These new tools also help improve our understanding of diseases, product development, prediction of drug effects, design of clinical trials, looking to eventually move from the traditional medication to personalised patient treatment. We aim to publish and promote original research articles spanning across basic ideas to technological advances and translational research in the aforementioned areas, as well as informative review articles summarising key topics.

This journal also strives to meet the increasing demand for open access publication from researchers, funders and institutions. Open access publication ensures your research can be disseminated immediately and read by the widest possible audience, increasing the impact of your work. Author contributions are reinvested back into the continued operation of the journal. Any surplus generated by the journal helps support charitable endeavours of the RPS to support our vision to become the world leader in the safe and effective use of medicines. The rest of the surplus goes to our not-for-profit publishing partner OUP which is a department of the University of Oxford whose charitable mission is to further excellence in research, scholarship and education by publishing worldwide: http://global.oup.com/.

We welcome submissions from all researchers in pharmacy and pharmacology across the world. The journal is founded on principles of equality, diversity and inclusion across all our activities and articles will be considered fairly and transparently from anyone who wishes to publish their work.

RPSPPR is your forum for the publication of original research and reviews to the benefit of the wider scientific community. I hope that our mission and ethos will encourage you to contribute to this new endeavour by enjoying reading the journal and submitting your work for publication.
